아스트라제네카, 임상시험 자회사 에비노바의 한도 폐지(AstraZeneca removes cap on clinical trial subsidiary Evinova)

메이저 제약회사 아스트라제네카(AstraZeneca)는 다른 제약회사에  유료로 디지털 임상시험 도구를 제공하는 의료 기술 비즈니스 ‘에비노바(Evinova)’의 한도를 해제했다고 악시오스가 보도했다. 임상 실험의 경우 메이저 의료 센터에서 고비용에 장기간 이뤄지는 연구가 대부분이다. 때문에 이를 다양화하고 간소화할 수 있는 아이디어를 가진 임상실험 스타트업의 몸값도 높아지고 있고 투자도 이어지고 있다.

주요 임상 시험 수탁기관(contract research organizations, CRO)인 파렉셀과 포트레아는 이미 고객에게 도구를 제공하기 위해 에비노바와 계약을 체결했다.

자료에 따르면 에비노바는 원격 데이터 수집과 가상 방문(virtual visits)을 포함한 전통적인 분산형 의료 연구를 수행할 수 있는 앱에 대한 액세스 권한을 CRO와 기타 제약회사에 제공했다. 모기업인 아스트라제네카(AstraZeneca)는 이 스타트업에 자금을 지원했으며 이 스타트업은 아스트라제네카 그룹에 속하게 된다. 에비노바 앱은 80개 언어로 제공된다.

아스트라제네카의 CEO인 파스칼 소리오트는 보도자료에서 “디지털 솔루션을 통해 의약품 개발의 미래를 앞당길 수 있다”며 “에비노바의 과학적 전문성이 탄소 배출을 줄이면서 환자 치료를 향상시킬 수 있는 상당한 기회를 제공할 것이라고 믿었다”고 말했다.

실제, 많은 벤처자금들은 다양한 임상시험 지원 스타트업에 유입되고 있다. 제약회사에 AI 기반 간소화 기술 사용을 청구하는 스타트업인 매크로 트라이얼즈(Macro Trials)와 알티스 랩스(Altis Labs)는 6월 총 1,200만 달러의 시드 펀딩을 유치했다.

토포그래피 헬스(Topography Health)는 지난 1월 플러그 앤 플레이 연구 플랫폼(plug-and-play research platform)으로 지역 의사를 참여시키기 위해 시리즈 A 펀딩에서 2,150만 달러의 투자를 모았다.  레이파이 헬스(Reify Health)는 지난 4월 클라우드 기반 연구 소프트웨어로 48억 달러 가치를 인정받아 2억 2,000만 달러의 시리즈 D 자금을 모금했다.

Major drugmaker AstraZeneca has lifted the cap on Evinova, a medical technology business that provides digital clinical trial tools to other drugmakers for a fee, Axios reports. Clinical trials are expensive and lengthy studies conducted primarily at major medical centers, and dozens of startups have emerged with ideas to diversify and streamline them.

Major clinical trial contract research organizations (CROs) Parexel and Potrea have already signed deals with Aevinova to provide tools to their clients. According to publicly available data</a>, #Evinova has provided CROs and other pharma companies with access to apps that allow them to conduct traditional distributed medical research, including remote data collection and virtual visits. Parent company AstraZeneca funded the startup, which will become part of the AstraZeneca Group. The Evinova app is available in 80 languages.

"Digital solutions can accelerate the future of drug development," said AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot in a press release. "We believed that Evinova's scientific expertise offered significant opportunities to improve patient care while reducing carbon emissions."

Venture capital has recently been flowing into a variety of clinical trial support startups.  Macro Trials and Altis Labs, startups that charge pharmaceutical companies to use AI-powered streamlining technology, raised a combined $12 million in seed funding in June.

Topography Health raised $21.5 million in Series A funding in January to engage local physicians with a plug-and-play research platform.  In April, Reify Health raised $220 million in Series D funding at a $4.8 billion valuation for its cloud-based research software.
