사이토베일(Cytovale), 패혈증 진단 시장 진출을 위해 8,400만 달러 규모 시리즈 C 투자 유치(Cytovale closes $84M Series C to market sepsis diagnostic)

의료 진단 스타트업 사이토베일(Cytovale)는 패혈증 테스트 기기 상용화를 위해 8,400만 달러 규모 시리즈 C투자를  유치했다고 밝혔다.

패혈증(Sepsis)은 미국 병원에서 세 번째로 많은 사망원인으로 진단과 치료 시장이 상당히 크다.

CEO 아제이 샤(Ajay Shah)의 악시오스 인터뷰에서 이번 펀딩 라운드는 노웨스트 벤처 파트너스가 주도했으며, 새로운 투자자인 샌즈 캐피탈(Sands Capital)과 글로벌 헬스 인베스트먼트 코퍼레이션(Global Health Investment Corporation)이 참여했고 밝혔다.

이 자금 조달에는 다른 신규 및 기존 투자자의 참여와 브릿지 자금 전환도 포함됐다.

미국 캘리포니아 샌프란시스코에 본사를 둔 사이토베일의  주력 제품은 FDA 승인을 받은 패혈증 신속 진단 테스트 인텔리셉(IntelliSep)이다.

인텔리셉(IntelliSep)은 머신러닝을 통해 패헐증 환자와 정상인의 백혈구 반응(sepsis diagnosis)의 차이를 빠르게  파악할 수 있는 것이 특정이다. 채혈을 통해 진단 결과를 10분 이내 받을 수 있다.

사이토베일은 투자금을 사용해 전국의 더 많은 병원 응급실과 의료 시스템에 인텔리셉을 제공할 계획이다.

샤 CEO는"이 자본은 우리에게 수년간의 회사를 운영할 자금이 될 것"이며 "이번 라운드에서 좋은 위치를 차지할 수 있게 해줄 것입니다."라고 말했다. 현재 사이토베일은 수익을 내고 있지만 전체 규모는 공개하지 않았다.

한편, 패혈증으로 인한 사망자가 매년 상당 규모지만 신뢰할 수 있는 테스트는 거의 없었다.

업계에서는 패혈증을 조기 발견할 수 있는 사이토베일의 의료 시스템은 적시에 적절한 환자에게 적절한 치료를 제공하는 방식을 획기적으로 개선할 수 있는 놀라운 잠재력을 가지고 있다고 말하고 있다.

사이토베일은 2019년에 마지막으로 투자 유치에 성공했으며, 브레이크아웃 벤처스와 블랙혼 벤처스(Breakout Ventures and Blackhorn Ventures)가 공동 주도한 1,500만 달러 규모의 시리즈 B를 마감한 바 있다.

Ajay Shah, CEO of diagnostics company Cytovale, says the company has raised $84 million in Series C funding to commercialize its sepsis test, Axios reports. Sepsis is the third leading cause of death in U.S. hospitals, making the market for diagnostics and treatment critical.

The funding round was led by Northwest Venture Partners, with participation from new investors Sands Capital and Global Health Investment Corporation. The financing also included participation from other new and existing investors and a conversion of bridge funding;

Headquartered in San Francisco, California, USA, Cytovail's flagship product is IntelliSep, a rapid sepsis test approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA);

IntelliSep assesses the body's immune response to infection by using machine learning to characterize the different white blood cell responses between septic and non-septic patients. It's especially convenient because it provides diagnostic results in less than 10 minutes using a standard blood draw;

With this investment, CytoVale plans to bring Intellisep to more hospital emergency departments and health systems across the country;

"This capital will allow us to run the company for many years," Shah said, "and we are well positioned for this round." CytoVale is currently profitable, but has not disclosed the full scale of its operations;

Meanwhile, sepsis causes a significant number of deaths each year, but there were few reliable tests available. The industry recognized that Cytovail's ability to detect sepsis early had tremendous potential to dramatically improve the way healthcare systems deliver the right care to the right patient at the right time;

CytoVale last raised funding in 2019, closing a $15 million Series B co-led by Breakout Ventures and Blackhorn Ventures;
